[ It's been a few days since the first arrivals trickled in to this iteration of the monastery, and there's been some improvement to the area, at least.
Which is fortunate, really, because the clouds have finally decided to open up and let out a torrential downpour.
The grass out in the courtyard almost immediately becomes saturated with water, squishing beneath people's feet as they step through it. Drainage in the monastery is a real problem in some parts, particularly near the marketplace area. Slowly, as time passes, pools begin to form, though some of the remaining debris serves as a decent buffer between the water and whatever crates merchants may have left behind. It may be a good idea to salvage some of that, though it's not likely to be ruined thanks to said debris. In general, it's likely a rude awakening for any new arrivals.
Of course, some would say that rainy days are the best when it comes to fishing; some would even say they're right, given how the fish seem to be out in droves at the lake. If one didn't mind potentially getting soaked, they could bring in a real haul during this rainstorm. The dining hall is not nearly as well stocked as it had been in its heyday, so this could potentially be beneficial for the community.
For some, it's likely best to stay inside and find shelter from the rain. Thankfully, most of the monastery roofing seems to be intact, save for a few sizeable holes in the cathedral. Still, that doesn't mean there isn't a leak here and there, so watch your step, particularly in the dining hall and the second floor of the dormitories as well. It might not be a bad idea to put a few buckets out to catch all that water . . . ]

[[ MORE HOUSEKEEPING, hey what's up guys:
- please PM this journal if there are more setting changes you'd like to be noted! i.e. if your character did some sprucing up in the greenhouse, just let me know and I will update the setting page accordingly.
- as noted on the "mod" plurk, I'll try putting up open posts roughly once a week going forward. it'll depend on how things are going, no big. ]]

[It will be difficult. They don't have the supplies to replace the broken glass, but something must be done about it.]

Try to set the glass aside. Perhaps if we're lucky, we will find a book on how to reforge it. ...do you know anyone here that is good with plants?
no subject
Yes. I have met Bernadetta earlier this afternoon, and I believe she is quite skilled in that area. I will defer to her if I have questions about anything growing in there.
[Especially considering her first day trying to pick out the weeds in there was a riot. Thank the Goddess that no one was around to see it because her endeavors were almost as embarrassing as spiking that goddamn rock into the lake bed.]
no subject
Was she all right?
no subject
[She's not going to say "that's preposterous" and she's not going to say "I'd never". Because Edelgard already knows that if the pieces fell just so... she would. Perhaps maybe if she didn't have the aid of Byleth, or perhaps if she thought Bernadetta already dead before fleeing. There are so many possibilities that could send her to that path that she knows...
She knows it's a decision that could be made countless times with a thousand excuses. A part of her hurts for it, but another is of the mind that a death for the greater good is not a death in vain. She would rather lay down her own life than give up on trying.]

I am glad the two of you have had the chance to speak with one another. I was... concerned, but it was not my place to intervene.

[Such loyalty must be recognized. Bernadetta gave her all for Edelgard, and she will absolute not make little of it.]
no subject
He won't, of course. She would only rebuff him, and comfort from an enemy would likely be seen as patronizing.]
Yes. It is our responsibility to ensure the sacrifices of our people are not in vain. She is a sweet girl — I am happy to assist you, though I understand if you feel it is a duty you must carry out alone.
no subject
Are we clear?
[She knows he'll be a respectable gentleman, but should he callous or should he misstep Edelgard will make him pay for his indiscretions.]

[Does she fear that he'll hurt her unintentionally? It's something Dimitri fears. He fears it with everyone. That someday he might snap again, that the people close to him will be wounded, either physically due to him lashing out or emotionally as they watch him unravel. He wants to think that he's changed now, that he's learning to live without clinging to hate and anger to shield him from his grief, but would another tragedy transform him back into a monster? Dimitri falls quiet.]

[Silence falls between them. The only noise that fills the space is the crackling of the fire and a few voices in the background hushed and barely audible. In the quiet Edelgard pulls all her hair forward over her shoulders revealing the window of bare skin on her back once more. Delicately she returns to finger combing the delicate silver locks.]

But from this close, he can see it. The way she holds her lids in an open position, ever so slightly unnatural. It would be unnoticeable from a distance, unremarkable to most — if anything, it just makes her look like she's trying to focus on something. If not for the fact that he's looking for some sign of the pain she must be feeling, Dimitri wouldn't see it, either. Now that he is...
He's seen it before. When they were small, when Edelgard would open her eyes wide as if it would dry out her tears, too proud to shed them. Back then, it was a far more exaggerated expression, and since he only saw it a couple of times, Dimitri hasn't thought of it in a long, long time; he would never have connected it to her as an adult. What she does now is subtle, inscrutable without the missing pieces of knowing how she feels and remembering who she was when she was only "El".
What happened to her?]
...you are very strong, Edelgard.
no subject
Slowly, as she gathers the words she'd like to use, her hand pulls through the rest of her hair. Dimitri's observation is absolutely correct, and while she doesn't know how closely he's watching her she tries to stay guarded at all times no matter what.
Her time growing up with her uncle Arundel helped perfect her poker face.]
An Emperor needs to be. My father was a good man, but he was soft and the insurrection made it so he could never be strong.
no subject
[No matter how much time passes, he's always going to be Dimitri — if that means crying in front of the entire capital, that's just how it is. He shakes his head.]
Still, it is regrettable that such strength is necessary. Whichever of us prevails, I hope that we can build a kinder world.
no subject
[A world in which everyone cuts their own path.
Edelgard pushes her hair back over her shoulder. The impossibly long waves now hiding what little bit of unblemished skin she has besides her face. A beautiful, unmarked back. Always protected by others.]
no subject
A world where everyone can cut their own path...
[They want the same thing in the end, they really do. Can they maybe settle their differences? Dimitri looks up toward the ceiling.]
...I spoke with — Sothis.
[Is this how Ashe feels when Dimitri tries to get him to use his name instead of saying "Your Highness"? It's definitely uncomfortable!]
She would like to speak with you again.
no subject
It is not as if there is anywhere for me to hide here. She can find me if she needs to.
no subject
[He trails off, unsure of how to phrase this. It isn't as if Dimitri lacks eloquence, but finding the right words to say in a situation like this is difficult.]
I think she wants to help. She did not go into details, but I believe she was somehow... trapped. Her memories are jumbled. Even so, I get the impression that perhaps, at one point, the goddess we were raised to believe in did exist.
no subject
[But she cannot bear to hear it anymore. Talks of hope and compromise makes her uneasy. Edelgard stands in hopes to distance herself from him.]
no subject
Mending this bridge is difficult, indeed.]
